an inspired solution for two multifunctional spaces in a private residence.
In this custom installation for a private residence, we developed two areas – with two themes, in two different rooms – that complement one another, like positive and negative forms. One is open and exposed – assembled by different elements, while the other more intimate and sheltered.
The first space is a room created within a room. we call it ‘nest’. It dividids the originally open space into an area usable as a guest room, yoga space, or kids playroom. We lifted the floor to create storage under the new raised platform, and created a clear division between the new space and the lower floor in the rest of the home. It becomes cozy when closed off by a curtain and sliding doors, and the pine wood gives additional warmth.
The second space is composed of different elements, each of a different material or color to emphasize its function. The backbone of the construction is a room height shelve providing space for books on one site and clothing storage on the other. Above the walk-in closet rests a loft platform where a leather hammock spans between the platform and the wall, completing the composition. The space above is private, for relaxing away from the rest of the apartment. The platform extents into a little balcony which hovers above the masterbed and provides visibility into the other rooms.
